Chapter 5 – Triggers & Alternatives

Now that you’ve completed Chapter 4 you recognize that assaultive behavior exists within a cyclical pattern. A solid understanding of that pattern is one of your greatest assets for reducing escalation and supporting your client’s return to baseline behavior. Interrupting the cycle of assault before violent behavior occurs is the focus of this section.

Chapter 5 presents four models of interaction for staff to use when client behavior is away from baseline. These models are considered alternatives to violence. In this section, the emphasis is on using these alternatives to successfully interrupt the assault pattern during escalation, before a crisis actually occurs.

By first identifying client triggers and then offering alternatives that meet client needs without the use of violence you reduce the potential for assault and trauma while increasing safety for everyone in the environment.
